Travel preparation

How should I prepare a puppy or kitten for travel?

Age, documentation and the particular needs of puppies and kittens.

Age, weaning, veterinary readiness and official and airline acceptance must align before booking. This guide brings together the shared checks while distinguishing puppy and kitten preparation.

Minimum age and actual eligibility

No single age authorises every international journey. Gather the date of birth, identification and veterinary records; check departure, transit, entry and airline conditions before fixing the travel date.

Build the documentation timeline

Identification, vaccination and official documents can have a required order and specific timing. Do not transfer rules from a previous flight to a new itinerary. The veterinarian and competent authorities must confirm the requirements for the case.

Young animals and the European Union

Exceptions for young animals without fully valid rabies protection are not accepted for every movement within the EU. The European Commission states that these young animals cannot enter from a non-EU country or territory. Consult the official source and the route checklist.

Preparing a puppy

Discuss individual development and readiness with the veterinarian. Introduce the carrier gradually and plan handling, rest and opportunities to relieve themselves around the journey. Meeting a minimum age does not by itself establish readiness.

Preparing a kitten

Allow time for carrier familiarisation and plan handling that avoids unnecessary openings or transfers. Anticipate airport checks and handover arrangements. The veterinarian should assess the kitten’s individual needs.

Cabin, hold and shared containers

The travel method and any shared-container arrangement depend on the airline, animals and itinerary. Being littermates or fitting inside one box does not confirm acceptance. Do not assume universal limits on number, age or weight.

Checks before booking

Confirm that the date meets official conditions, every flight accepts the animal and the carrier is suitable. Establish who travels and how arrival is managed. Use the route checklist for the specific documents.
